002 | Planter Box

Over the weekend I turned a pile of decking planks into possibly the heaviest planter box in existence. It all started a few weeks ago when one of the strawberry plants in a pot began growing at an incredible rate and showing some real potential. Being quite fond of strawberries I decided to turn a pile of decking planks into a large planter box and plant 3 more strawberry bushes? shrubs?

This won’t be an in-depth build post, but it will give an overview into the construction of this planter box, material used and a few things I’d change next time. I’m a metal worker by trade and haven’t done much wood working, so I apologize to any wood workers… some of these photo’s I may be doing things that upset you.

Tools UsedUsed For
Drop SawCutting everything to length
Router (Overkill)Round off some sharp corners
Tape MeasureGeneral measuring/checking diagonals
Jigsaw (Handsaw would be fine)Notching around corners
Milwaukee DrillDrilling holes
Milwaukee ImpactDriving in screws
You’ll notice I didn’t use a square, mainly because I couldn’t find mine. If everything is cut square with the drop saw and you check diagonals/use the 3,4,5 method to check squareness, you can get by without one. Albeit you’ll need a little more patience.

Holy hell. I only just realized how much decking went into this planter box. Perhaps I should have built a deck.
Here I am assembling the 2nd end of the planter box. To make life easier I’m using the 1st side of the box as a template and building off of it. It means I didn’t have to square anything up, check any measurements etc. And even if they are slightly over/under size they will at least be identical measurement wise.
Assuming the deck and the brick wall of the house are square to one another it helped with the assembly of the planter box. A plate square would have been handy here however using the 3,4,5 method and some patience the box came together within a few mm of square.
You’ll see here the 70*70 / 30*30 pine. The jigsaw was used to notch the plank around the 70*70 uprights and there’s a couple smaller pieces I made to hold the final thinner plank in place.

And lastly I lined the planter box with black builders plastic to hopefully extend the life of the planter box.
